CLEAN UP THE WORLD MEDITERRANEAN INITIATIVE (2006)

Clean Up the World's Mediterranean Initiative (Clean Up the Mediterranean)

In 2005, European Members of Clean Up the World proposed to join forces in order to clean up, fix up and conserve the environment in one of the world's iconic regions: the Mediterranean.

The Clean Up the Mediterranean campaign took shape in 2006, with Clean Up the World members - ranging from scout groups to diving associations from 13 countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East - pledging their support to this first-ever regional initiative conducted under the umbrella of Clean Up the World.

Clean Up the Mediterranean focused the efforts of existing and potential new Clean Up the World Members on taking practical steps to address the region's environmental problems and promoting the idea of an ecosystem approach.

The initiative built upon existing activities of Clean Up the World Members in the Mediterranean region, including:

  • removal of rubbish from the natural and urban environment
  • underwater clean ups
  • tree planting and revegetation projects
  • biodiversity conservation and habitat restoration actions
  • community recycling and water reuse projects
  • environmental awareness raising and education activities.

Held in conjunction with UNEP Mediterranean Action Plan, the launch of the Clean Up the Mediterranean campaign took place in Athens, Greece on 15 September 2006, ahead of the Clean Up the World weekend.

The countries that have joined the initiative include Algeria, Egypt, Greece, France, Israel, Morocco, Palestine, Portugal, Serbia & Montenegro, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and the UK (Gibraltar).

Groups, organisations, businesses and communities across the region were encouraged to join the Clean Up the Mediterranean campaign. Members received information and materials to assist with the promotion and implementation of environmental activities.
