CLEAN UP THE WORLD MEDITERRANEAN INITIATIVE (2007)

Clean Up the World Mediterranean Initiative (2007)

In 2005, European Members of Clean Up the World proposed to join forces in order to clean up, fix up and conserve the environment in one of the world's iconic regions: the Mediterranean.

In 2006, Clean Up the World members - ranging from scout groups to diving associations from 13 countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East - pledged their support for the first-ever regional initiative (the then called Clean Up the Mediterranean) conducted under the umbrella of Clean Up the World.

We are pleased to announce that in 2007 the renamed Clean Up the World Mediterranean Initiative was again supported and promoted by Clean up the World and participating members in the region. It focused on the efforts of Clean Up the World member organisations who are taking practical steps to address the region's environmental problems and promoting the idea of an ecosystem approach. Activities of members included:

  • removal of rubbish from the natural and urban environment
  • underwater clean ups
  • tree planting and re-vegetation projects
  • biodiversity conservation and habitat restoration actions
  • community recycling and water reuse projects
  • environmental awareness raising and education activities.

Groups, organisations, businesses and communities across the region are encouraged to join the Clean Up the World Mediterranean Initiative by becoming a Clean Up the World member. Members will receive information and materials to assist with the promotion and implementation of environmental activities.
