Keeping the World Informed
The Clean Up the World team in Sydney promotes the campaign at an international level through a global marketing and communications campaign. The campaign acts to strengthen Members' local promotions and increase promotional opportunities by linking with a number of media networks to assist in generating awareness and exposure for local initiatives.
As a Member you are encouraged to actively promote your membership and the Clean Up the World activities or projects you organise.
The aim of local promotions is to make people aware of clean up and other environmental initiatives, encourage community members to participate and reinforce the global nature of the campaign. Linking your activities or projects with the international media and marketing campaign organised by the Clean Up the World team is a great way of achieving these aims.
Promoting your initiatives can be as simple as organising a media launch, developing partnerships with local media to advertise your activities, sending out media releases about your activities or projects, displaying posters in local community halls, or arranging for the promotional video to be played locally.

Approaching the Media
Developing a relationship with your local media is important. To encourage support for your initiatives actively approach your local media, which may be a newspaper, radio station or television station. When you contact them, the best approach is to telephone and ask to speak to the chief-of-staff, editor, or a reporter that may deal with environment issues.
Introduce yourself as a local Clean Up the World Member and ask if you could send them some details about what is happening for this years campaign (ask for their fax number and fax it to them, mail it, email it, or drop it off at their office). While on the phone, ask them if they would support your efforts by reporting on the activities or projects you will be undertaking.
Specifically for television and newspapers, discuss what your initiative will look like - if a clean up - is your site very polluted? What sort of rubbish is there? Is it a creek, a park or a beach, or a landmark etc? The person you are talking to will be thinking about how interesting the site(s) would be to film/photograph.
Ask if they would like to visit your activity to interview a representative and film or photograph volunteers in action. Remember, the best story is often one containing local information, local imagery and local people.
Handy Hint! Provide us with your media contact and we can also send them information about Clean Up the World and your event. Be sure to send us details of any coverage you get!
