ANNUAL THEME (2008)

Start Today....Save Tomorrow. Clean Up Our Climate.

In 2008, Clean Up the World is encouraging and supporting Members to take action at a local level to help address this very global issue. Although climate change can seem like a complex issue there is a wide variety of simple actions that every individual and community can take to make a difference. Energy conservation, education programs, planting trees, walk to work days and waste reduction projects are just a few of the possible options that Members can choose from.

To learn more about this important issue and for further suggestions for action see the Clean Up the World Climate Change Information Sheets (see below) and the Climate Change section of the Internet Resources Link.

Members taking Action

Reducing waste helps cut the emissions that cause climate change. CUW Members may also like to consider carrying out tree planting and energy conservation projects that also help to address this issue.

World Environment Day

World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

The World Environment Day slogan for 2008 is Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy. Recognising that climate change is becoming the defining issue of our era, UNEP is asking countries, companies and communities to focus on greenhouse gas emissions and how to reduce them. The World Environment Day will highlight resources and initiatives that promote low carbon economies and life-styles, such as improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation and eco-friendly consumption.
