In 2005, David de Rothschild founded Adventure Ecology, an organisation that uses adventure and the arts to create stories that inform and inspire action via a global community.
His commitment to the environment has sent him to some of the worlds most remote and fragile regions. In 2006, David spent over 100 days crossing The Arctic from Russia to Canada, which saw him become one of only 42 people, and the youngest British person to ever reach both geographical poles. Prior to his 2006 ‘Top of the World Expedition', David had already become one of only 14 people ever to traverse the continent of Antarctica, and was part of a team that during it's double traverse broke the world record for the fastest ever crossing of the Greenland Icecap.
In early 2007 David completed writing the ‘Live Earth Global Warming Survival Handbook', which was the official companion book to the Live Earth concert series. Most recently, David was the editorial consultant for Earth Matters, a children's book published by Dorling Kindersley.
Last year saw David lead an expedition to Ecuador along with the high-profile artists: Gabriel Orozco, Adam Broomberg, Oliver Chanarin, Dustin Lynn and National Geographic ethno-botanist, Maria Fadiman. The group spent time in the Ecuadorian rainforest documenting the damage international oil companies had created by drilling the vast oil reserves, and in turn disturbing the natural and social order.
December 2008 will see David de Rothschild and a handpicked crew of experts set sail 8000 miles across the Pacific Ocean on an adventure called The Plastiki. The mission of The Plastiki is to capture the imagination of the global media to draw attention to rethinking our human impact on the natural world and oceans. The voyage will sail through a number of exciting, challenging and environmentally sensitive regions, including the ominously named Eastern Garbage Patch. The Eastern Garbage Patch is an area 6 times the size of England, where plastic outweighs plankton by 6:1. It is the world's largest waste dump. It is intended that The Plastiki expedition will change attitudes towards the world's oceans, the whole idea of ‘waste' and the increasingly unacceptable reality of pollution.
National Geographic has awarded David de Rothschild a ‘Fellow' and The World Economic Forum made David a ‘Young Global Leader'.
