Clean Up the World partners with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to inspire and empower communities to "clean up, fix up and conserve their local environment" by carrying out initiatives ranging from waste removal and tree planting to water and energy conservation projects.

An estimated 35 million volunteers from more than 120 countries participate in Clean Up the World annually. Activities and longer-term environmental projects are undertaken throughout the year with the campaign culminating in the Clean Up the World Weekend in 3rd weekend of September each year.

Clean Up the World participants and their activities must be in alignment with the Clean Up the World Ethos (see below). Single activities such as clean ups, tree planting and awareness raising events such as festivals, competitions and exhibitions are carried out along with  longer term projects which may involve an ongoing process of recycling and waste recovery, education campaigns or water reuse and conservation.

Join Clean Up the World

Getting involved is simple. Groups or organisations in any city, town or village across the globe can join Clean Up the World. Registration is free* for non business/corporate organisations and renewable annually. Just visit our activities website to register and put your group and its activities on the global environmental map!

You can choose to register as a Member which will allow you access to all the features of the activities website and provide you with a range of support services for promoting and organising your activity.

*Business/Corporate Organisations Please Note: Clean Up the World requests Corporate or Large Company Members to pay a Membership fee of USD$200 to help us support not for profit Members. We will contact you in relation to this after you have registered.

Renewing your Membership

Clean Up the World participants are required to renew their membership each year. Applying to renew your group's membership is easy. Just visit the Clean Up the World Activities website using your existing username and password and follow the steps. If you are unable to register online please contact info@cleanuptheworld.org for further assistance.

Clean Up the World Ethos

Before you join Clean Up the World as a Member or a Guest, you and your organisation/group must understand and agree to honour the spirit of Clean Up the World campaign. We are:

  • Committed to making a positive difference to the community and environment - so your Activities should be inspiring, engaging and respectful of the local community.
  • A volunteer movement - so people cannot be charged to be involved in your Activities.
  • Committed to the safety of volunteers - so your Activities must be carried out in accordance with the local laws and regulations relevant to your Activity.
  • A non-confrontational and apolitical organisation - so participants and your Activities must be peaceful and without political connection, content or bias.
  • Welcoming to communities of all nations, cultures, races and faiths - so participants and your Activities must respect political, cultural, and religious difference and beliefs.
  • Non-partisan - so participants and your Activities must not promote partisan, political, cultural or religious viewpoints, or imply endorsement of partisanship by Clean Up the World.

Benefits of Membership

Clean Up the World provides a range of information and support services aimed at assisting Members to organise and promote clean up events and other environmental initiatives. These include:

  • The provision of electronic tools and resources to assist you in implementing and promoting local environmental initiatives. These include an Event Guide, certificates, environmental fact sheets, and promotional materials.
  • The provision of your own Group Profile and Activity Page on the Clean Up the World Activities Website.
  • Access to Members-only section of the Clean Up the World website
  • Access to an education kit suitable for primary school students
  • The opportunity to link with like-minded organisations across the globe
  • Regular bulletins and media releases providing the latest campaign news and information
  • Advice on networking, event management and environmental issues
  • Support materials in English, French or Spanish
  • Information and support from the Clean Up the World team based in Sydney, Australia.

Responsibilities of Membership

As a valued Member of this global campaign, Clean Up the World asks you to:
  • Ensure you adhere to the Clean Up the World Ethos
  • Encourage volunteers to take part free of charge
  • Promote your initiatives through local media and community networks
  • Obtain sponsorship/build partnerships and work cooperatively with local organisations and other Clean Up the World members to support your activities
  • Provide the Clean Up the World team in Sydney with information, photos and footage to assist our international promotional efforts
  • Follow guidelines concerning the use of the Clean Up the World name and logo
  • Plan and coordinate activities in adherence to the guidelines outlined in the registration process including the terms and conditions of the Member Agreement
